"
What is Third Month Fair? "
Third
Month Fair is also known as Avalokitesvara's Festival.
It was Avalokitesvara, a Buddhist diety, who was said
to have opened up the Dali area, subdued Monster Luocha,
and brought prosperity to the people. Every year from
the 15th to the 20th of the third lunar month, people
gather at the Three Pagodas Temple to pay homage and express
thanks to Avalokitesvara. Along with the development of
a commodity-based economy, trade has become brisk at the
annual gathering, until finally it has become a yearly
fair.

"
Who is Bai and why do you call them Bai?"
The Bai nationality has a population of more than
11 million that mainly live in compact communities in
Dali Prefecture. They have an extensive history as a flourishing
culture. Bai people are known to be diligent, simple and
honest, with a collective admiration for the color of
white. In Chinese, 'bai'
means white; that is why
they are named so.
"
What can we expect from the Third Month Fair?"
This is a great opportunity for you to interact
with local people, to learn about their culture, to
share their happiness and to have fun. You can bargain
at the market, taste their traditional foods, watch
horse racing or local operas, and enjoy folk singing
and dancing.
